When God Says "Go" Again // Ezra 5

Theme: God calls His people to resume His work with confidence, even after setbacks.

Big Idea: God's work may be opposed, but it will not be stopped when His people walk in obedience.

1. Get Back to Building (vv. 1–2)

“Then the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied…” (v.1)

Explanation: After years of delay, the people were stirred to action through the preaching of God's Word.

Application: Don’t let past discouragements or delays keep you from obeying God today. Obedience may start with a word from God, but it must be followed by action.

Illustration: Like someone restarting a workout routine after months off — it’s not easy, but the first step matters most.

2. Stand Firm When Questioned (vv. 3–5)

“Who hath commanded you to build this house...?” (v.3)

Explanation: Opposition came quickly, questioning their authority. But God’s eye was on them.

Application: When you’re in God’s will, opposition is confirmation, not cancellation. Keep going, even when people don’t understand your obedience.

Reflection: Are you more afraid of human questions than divine commands?

3. Speak with Boldness and Integrity (vv. 6–17)

“…We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth...” (v.11)

Explanation: Their response wasn’t defensive but faithful. They shared their history and mission honestly and humbly.

Application: In a world that doesn’t understand your faith, speak with clarity, truth, and love. Don’t be ashamed to say, “We are God’s servants.”

Illustration: Like Daniel in Babylon, living and speaking truthfully even under scrutiny.

Conclusion:

Ezra 5 reminds us that setbacks are not the end of the story. God sends His Word to reignite your purpose, and His eye is on you as you walk forward in faith. The world may question your mission, but God affirms it.

Call to Action:

Have you allowed fear or frustration to delay God’s work in your life?

What “building” do you need to restart — prayer life, ministry, spiritual leadership?

Will you step out again, trusting that God’s hand is upon you?
